The first of two works created in 2007 for The Babel Project (find out more here) in Wellington, Are you proud is about confused identity, about being Māori but not feeling Māori enough, about not knowing enough about my own background and whakapapa, about feeling fractured and divided within my own self.

One of two pieces I created in 2012, this work was inspired by a guided visualisation I undertook to aid me in making my decision. During the visualisation I was visited by a spirit guide on top of a mountain. She presented me with three gifts in a waka huia - a white feather, a pounamu tiki, and a pearl - and asked me to choose one to help me on my journey.

The second of two works created in 2007 for The Babel Project (find out more here) in Wellington, Silence (is not the same as absence) contemplates the generations of ancestors that are a part of me and reside within my genes and are present in my characteristics, even though I may not be able to "hear" them or know them as well as I would like to.

Toto (meaning 'blood' in Te Reo Māori) was created while I was in my first (and only) year of a Bachelor of Māori Visual Art & Design at Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi in 2006.  It speaks through visual imagery of the strength and gifts we receive from our tipuna (ancestors) through the very blood that flows through our veins, some of which we are not even aware that we share with those who came before us.
